Ever since I watched it all those years ago, I have loved John Carpenter’s Big Trouble in Little China. As a kid, I’m sure that it was the action scenes that spoke to me the most. But as I’ve gotten older, I’ve found myself enjoying the wisdom that came out of Jack Burton’s mouth. And, on more than one occasion, I’ve wondered what he would do in my shoes.
So here are the five things that Jack Burton said to get you through anything life throws your way:
1. Just remember what ol’ Jack Burton does when the earth quakes, and the poison arrows fall from the sky, and the pillars of Heaven shake. Yeah, Jack Burton just looks that big ol’ storm right square in the eye and he says, ‘Give me your best shot, pal. I can take it.’
Whenever you’re faced with a huge challenge, think about how Jack Burton would deal with it. He wouldn’t cower from it. He wouldn’t pretend that it wasn’t happening. He’d look it straight on and do all he could to make it through.
2. Jack Burton: You know what ol’ Jack Burton always says at a time like this?
Jack Burton: Jack Burton. Me!
There are times in life when we look for advice from others. And while that can be a good thing, as Jack points out, sometimes the best advice is the stuff we give ourselves. We’re never as hopeless as we may feel. All we need to do is listen to the voice from within and trust it.
3. Wang Chi: You ready, Jack?
Jack Burton: I was born ready.
While this line in itself maybe isn’t anything that hasn’t been said before, it’s his delivery that makes it all worth while. He says it with such confidence – or, should I say, arrogance. Whatever the case, every time you think about it, you’ll feel like you can take on the world!
4. I’m a reasonable guy, but I’ve just experienced some very unreasonable things.
We’ve all been in situations that don’t make any sense to us. And I’m sure we’ve all tried our best to deal with them, calmly and rationally. But, every now and then, something happens that blows us away. So when we react to it in possibly not the most civil of manners, we have to give ourselves a break. Not everything is easy to take. That doesn’t make us bad people. It makes us Jack-like. And that’s anything but bad!
5. Ol’ Jack always says…what the hell?
This is, by far, the greatest piece of advice we can take from Jack. Life is filled with ups and downs. Things aren’t always going to go the way we want…or even imagined. But, in the end, we’ve gotta try. After all, we’ll more than likely learn from the experience and, who knows, maybe even gain something great from it.
So the next time you’re faced with something difficult, don’t worry too much about it. Instead, throw on a tank top and give ‘em hell!
